The Fundación Conocimiento y Desarrollo (CYD) has published its latest 2026 university ranking. The results are attracting attention: for the first time, the University of Navarra tops Spain’s higher education system, overtaking the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), which had previously held the first place.

The CYD Ranking is considered one of the most comprehensive analyses of Spain’s higher education system. In the latest edition, 84 universities were assessed – representing around 87 per cent of all active higher education institutions in the country. A total of 36 performance indicators were evaluated across the areas of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, internationalisation, regional development and graduate employability.
University of Navarra takes first place for the first time
The private University of Navarra achieved 28 out of 36 top scores this year, allowing it to take the top position in the ranking for the first time. The university performs particularly strongly in the areas of international outlook, research and teaching. It also ranks first nationwide in Business Administration (ADE).
This places the University of Navarra ahead of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, which had topped the ranking the previous year. The institution in Pamplona has long been regarded as one of Spain’s strongest private research universities and enjoys an excellent reputation, particularly in medicine, business and international study programmes.
The twelve best universities in Spain
According to the CYD Ranking 2026, the universities with the highest number of top ratings include:

- Autonomous University of Barcelona
- Pompeu Fabra University
- Autonomous University of Madrid
- Ramon Llull University
- International University of Catalonia
- University of Barcelona
- Polytechnic University of Catalonia
- Comillas Pontifical University
- University of Valencia
- Rovira i Virgili University
The strong presence of Catalan universities is particularly notable. Seven of the twelve highest-ranked universities are based in Catalonia. This further underlines the region’s importance as one of Spain’s key centres for research and higher education.
Catalonia remains Spain’s scientific powerhouse
Although the University of Navarra leads the overall ranking, Catalonia remains the country’s strongest higher education region. In particular, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the University of Barcelona (UB), Pompeu Fabra University and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) achieve excellent results in research and knowledge transfer.
The UAB continues to be regarded as one of Spain’s leading public universities. It stands out particularly in the fields of medicine, communication studies, political science, environmental sciences and engineering. In terms of knowledge transfer, it is even among the top performers in the country.
Madrid with two universities in the Top Five
The Madrid metropolitan region also maintains its strong position in the higher education sector. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid ranks second and is considered one of Spain’s leading universities, particularly in teaching, internationalisation and collaboration with industry. The institution also enjoys an excellent reputation in business, social sciences and engineering.
Also among the top five is the Autonomous University of Madrid, which is particularly known for its research performance and its programmes in the natural sciences.
What makes the CYD Ranking special
Unlike traditional league tables, the CYD Ranking does not produce a fixed overall order of all universities. Instead, it assesses each institution’s performance using objective indicators, allowing prospective students to compare universities based on their own priorities. This means factors such as research, internationalisation or employment prospects can be weighted differently depending on individual preferences.
The analysis covers more than 3,900 degree programmes across 31 subject areas, making it one of the most detailed higher education assessments in Europe.
Navarra as a leading higher education region
In addition to universities, the CYD Foundation also evaluates Spain’s individual regions. In this ranking, Navarra takes first place ahead of Catalonia and the Basque Country. This is mainly driven by outstanding results in research, teaching and internationalisation.
