Das dramatische Unglück
At around 4:30 PM, the footbridge, which is part of the popular coastal path between the Cabo Mayor Lighthouse and Virgen del Mar, collapsed. The group consisted of six students from the Centro Integrado de Formación Profesional (CIFP) La Granja de Heras and their supervisor. All were over 20 years old and were on a hike along the coastal path, outside of school activities. As they were crossing one of the footbridges, it collapsed for reasons still unknown, giving way and throwing the group onto the rocks and into the sea.
The emergency services found five dead – four women and their supervisor. One of the young women, who was initially admitted to Valdecilla Hospital in critical condition, later passed away. The only survivor of the tragedy, a young woman, was treated for hypothermia at the scene and then taken to the hospital.
Rescue and Search Operations
Immediately after the incident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched. Several fire brigades, maritime rescue teams, a helicopter, the police, and paramedics from the 061 service were on site to search for survivors and locate the missing persons. The search operation is continuing intensively, both on land and at sea. The Mayor of Santander, Gema Igual, stated that the rescue efforts would continue even after nightfall, despite the challenging sea conditions.
“The conditions are not ideal, but we will not give up. The search will continue until all the missing persons are found,” said the Mayor. A hotline has also been set up for relatives: 942 20 30 69, to coordinate the numerous calls that have been received due to the high media attention and inquiries from concerned families.
The Causes of the Tragedy and the Dangers of Coastal Infrastructure
The exact cause of the footbridge’s collapse is still unclear. However, experts suspect that the extreme sea weather conditions, with high waves and strong winds, destabilised the wooden structure of the footbridge. Gema Igual, the Mayor of Santander, stated that the bridge was part of a historic coastal infrastructure that is frequently used. The footbridge connects two cliffs at Playa de El Bocal and spans a stream that flows directly into the sea. The condition of the infrastructure is now being thoroughly investigated, as there had previously been reports of potential weaknesses in the bridge.
Reactions from the Authorities and the Region
The incident has caused great shock throughout Cantabria and beyond. María José Sáenz de Buruaga, the President of Cantabria, expressed her “shock” at the tragic accident and extended her solidarity to the victims and their families. She confirmed that the regional government has mobilised all available resources to assist with the rescue efforts.
The Spanish Royal Family also expressed its condolences and thanked the rescue teams. In a message on social media, they stated: “Our deepest condolences go to the families of the victims, and our thanks go to the rescue teams who are doing their best under difficult conditions.”
Search and Rescue Operation Ongoing
While the authorities continue the search for the missing persons, the coordination of the rescue operation has been optimised to follow every lead. The coast guard, police, and medical personnel are working around the clock to find any potential survivors and recover additional victims.
Future Safety Measures for Coastal Infrastructure
The incident once again raises questions about the safety of coastal infrastructure. In recent years, there have been ongoing discussions regarding the condition of footbridges and piers along the coast. Experts are calling for all coastal facilities to undergo thorough inspections to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
Conclusion
The incident in Santander is a tragic event that has sparked an important debate about the safety of coastal infrastructure. While the rescue operations continue, the regional government is under pressure to take measures to improve the safety and maintenance of coastal facilities.
