The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or promises to be one of the most exciting contests in recent years. At the heart of it is Lamine Yamal, whose performances for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team have made him one of the top contenders for the prestigious award. Alongside the 19-year-old forward, Harry Kane of FC Bayern Munich and Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid are considered his primary rivals.
For Yamal, a win would mark another highlight in an already highly successful year. The winger won the 2026 World Cup – held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico – with his national team, and also celebrated significant achievements with FC Barcelona. Consequently, his candidacy is bolstered by both individual performances and major team titles.
Lamine Yamal combines individual class with titles
Last season, Yamal impressed with his dribbling, creativity, and ability to decisively influence matches in the attacking third. With 25 goals and 23 assists in 56 appearances for both club and country, he underscored his importance to both teams.
The Spaniard also achieved significant success at the club level. With Barcelona, he won the Spanish league title and the Spanish Super Cup. Furthermore, he once again ranked among the league’s most prolific providers of assists. His performances make him a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or – an award that is not determined solely by the number of goals scored.
Yamal’s role in the Spanish national team is particularly significant. Winning the World Cup strengthens his case, even though his personal goal tally for the tournament – just one – was relatively low. Consequently, the deciding factor will likely be the weight the jury gives to his contributions on the pitch and his overall influence on the team’s play.
Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé as the strongest competitors
Despite his achievements, Yamal faces competition from two other players who also present a compelling case. Harry Kane arrives with an outstanding goal-scoring record and several titles won with FC Bayern Munich. The English forward secured the Bundesliga, the DFB-Cup, and the German Super Cup. With 36 goals in the Bundesliga, he also claimed the top-scorer title and currently stands as the European player with the highest number of goals scored in the 2025/26 season.
Kylian Mbappé, by contrast, relies primarily on his individual achievements. The Frenchman finished as the top scorer in the Spanish league, the Champions League, and the World Cup – scoring ten goals in the latter tournament alone. Despite this record, he lacks a major team title from the season under consideration, which could affect his chances.
The profiles of the three favorites differ significantly: Kane can base his case primarily on goals and club successes, while Mbappé’s candidacy rests on extraordinary individual statistics. Yamal, for his part, combines his on-field class with a World Cup title and domestic trophies won with Barcelona.
A World Cup title with Spain could make the difference
The awarding of the Ballon d’Or has traditionally depended on several factors. In addition to individual performances, success with one’s club and national team – as well as conduct both on and off the pitch – play a role. A World Cup can decisively shape the perception of a season, but it does not guarantee success in the voting.
Yamal benefits from having taken on a central role in Spanish football at such a young age. His performances for Barcelona and the national team have made him one of the most well-known players of his generation. Winning the Ballon d’Or would confirm this rise and further underscore his significance to Spanish football.
At the same time, the competition remains tight. Kane boasts a strong combination of goals and titles, while Mbappé presents a compelling case based on his prolific goal-scoring record. For Yamal, therefore, it will come down to whether the jury places greater value on his significance to Spain – the world champions – and his performances at the club level than on the individual statistics of his rivals.
Decision at the gala in London
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place this Monday at 9 p.m. in London. The voting by international sports journalists has already concluded. The decision has therefore been made, even though the winner’s name will not be revealed until the gala.
In Spain, attention is focused squarely on Yamal. With a World Cup title and his achievements at FC Barcelona, the attacking player has put forward a strong case. Whether this is enough to win the Ballon d’Or ultimately depends on how the various accomplishments are weighted. Consequently, the race between Yamal, Kane, and Mbappé remains wide open until the result is announced.
