Madrid has unexpectedly secured a place among the world’s ten best cultural cities. The Spanish capital is now officially ranked among the most important global cultural metropolises, joining a list typically dominated by cities such as London, Paris and New York.

The ranking is based on an international survey by Time Out, in which around 24,000 residents from more than 150 cities assessed their own city in terms of cultural offering, accessibility and quality of life. The results show that Madrid is firmly established in the top tier of global cultural cities.

A place among the world’s greats

In the global ranking, Madrid takes 9th place, outperforming numerous competing international cities. At the top are London, Paris and New York, followed by Berlin, Cape Town and Melbourne. São Paulo, Florence and Kraków also feature among the extended group of leading cities.

That Madrid has made it into the top ten in this context is considered remarkable, as the city has regularly performed well in previous rankings but has rarely been represented among the absolute global elite.

The cultural heart of Spain

A key reason for Madrid’s strong placement lies in its outstanding cultural infrastructure. Particularly noteworthy is the so-called “Golden Triangle of Art”, consisting of the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. These three institutions are among Europe’s most significant art collections and attract millions of visitors from around the world every year.

The Prado is regarded as one of the most important classical art museums in the world, while the Reina Sofía stands out for its modern art collection and iconic works such as Picasso’s “Guernica”. The Thyssen-Bornemisza completes the trio with a broad collection spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times, filling an important gap in the city’s cultural offering.

More than just museums: theatre, music and city life

But Madrid is not only impressive for its museums. Its vibrant theatre and music scene also plays a central role in the ranking. Gran Vía is regarded as one of Spain’s main hubs for musicals and stage productions, while numerous smaller venues offer experimental and alternative formats.

In addition, there are international concerts, festivals and a dynamic cultural scene spread across the entire city. In Madrid, culture is not confined to individual institutions but shapes everyday life in many neighbourhoods.

High levels of resident satisfaction

Particularly striking is the high level of cultural satisfaction among residents themselves. According to the survey, over 90 per cent rate the city’s cultural offering as good or excellent. Approval ratings for the museums are similarly high, while the theatre scene is also positively highlighted by a large proportion of respondents.

These figures show that Madrid is perceived as culturally strong not only by tourists, but also in the everyday lives of its residents.

A significant success for Spain

The leap into the global top ten is also a significant signal for Spain as a whole. Madrid is further strengthening its position as a cultural hub in Southern Europe and is increasingly competing directly with established cultural metropolises such as Paris, London and Rome.

The success also underlines the city’s growing international importance, as it is no longer solely Spain’s political and economic centre, but also plays a leading cultural role.
