Alcohol trend in Spain: fewer than one in five young people drink weekly – a clear shift in consumption habits

A clear societal shift in alcohol consumption is emerging in Spain. Regular drinking among young people in particular has declined sharply in recent years. New data now shows that fewer than 20 per cent of 15- to 24-year-olds consume alcoholic beverages at least once a week.

This continues a trend that has been observed for two decades and reflects profound changes in the leisure and consumption habits of the younger generation.

Marked decline among the younger generation

The figures show a clear trend: around 20 years ago, almost every second young person in Spain drank alcohol regularly, whereas today the share is below one fifth. Particularly striking is the long-term decline, which has continued almost continuously over recent years.

Experts see this not as a short-term effect, but as a structural change within society. Young people today drink significantly less often and, in many cases, more consciously or not at all.

Societal shift rather than isolated case

The decline is not seen as an isolated phenomenon, but rather as part of a broader societal shift. Factors such as changing lifestyles, greater health awareness, and new forms of leisure activities all play a key role in this development.

Social media, sporting activities and alternative leisure options have also, according to observers, contributed to alcohol becoming less important for many young people.

Spain in a European comparison

Despite the decline, alcohol remains a firm part of social life in Spain. It continues to play an important role, particularly in bars, restaurants and at social gatherings.

In a European comparison, however, the picture is mixed: while Spain has traditionally been considered a country with moderate but socially embedded alcohol consumption, the younger generation is increasingly moving towards abstinent or very occasional drinking patterns.

Generational paradox

A notable generational divide in consumption habits is emerging: while older age groups continue to consume alcohol at relatively stable levels, younger people are increasingly distancing themselves from it.

At the same time, phenomena such as so-called “binge drinking” at weekends still persist, where alcohol is consumed less frequently but in larger quantities.

Long-term trend with uncertain outlook

Whether this trend will continue in the coming years remains uncertain. However, experts believe that the decline in regular alcohol consumption among young people is not a short-term phenomenon, but rather a long-term change.

This points to a clear cultural shift in Spain – away from regular consumption and towards a far more restrained approach to alcohol among the younger generation.
