At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Elon Musk once again sparked debate. The Tesla and SpaceX chief unveiled an ambitious vision: he wants to turn large parts of the “España vaciada” — Spain’s sparsely populated rural regions — into vast solar power plants. These, he claims, could generate enough energy to cover Europe’s entire electricity demand.

Musk emphasised that the technology to achieve this already exists. He pointed to solar installations in China generating hundreds of gigawatts and explained that similar projects could be implemented in Spain. At the same time, however, he criticised the lack of political will and insufficient investment in renewable energy across Europe.
Solar energy on a massive scale – realistic or unrealistic?
The concept sounds spectacular: sunny, expansive areas in sparsely populated regions could, according to Musk, be ideal for generating solar power on a large scale. But could such a project truly meet Europe’s energy demand? And is Spain the right location for it?
Supporters see it as an opportunity for climate protection, creating new jobs in rural areas, and increasing independence from fossil fuels. Critics, on the other hand, warn of enormous costs, bureaucratic hurdles, and technical challenges in storing and distributing electricity over long distances.
More than just solar energy: Musk also talks about AI and robots
During his appearance in Davos, Musk did not focus solely on solar power. He also discussed the use of AI, humanoid robots, and the future role of technology in our daily lives. Yet at the centre of the discussion was his vision for Europe’s energy supply.
What do you think about it?
Is Elon Musk’s idea a forward-looking plan that could put Spain at the forefront of the energy transition?
Or is it more of an unrealistic dream that would be barely feasible in practice?
What would be the opportunities – and what the risks – for Spain if it were to become the “solar hub of Europe”?
