The Spanish region of Andalusia is significantly accelerating its digital modernisation of the healthcare system: all public hospitals are set to offer free, fast and unlimited Wi-Fi in the future. The project is considered one of the largest digital initiatives in the Spanish healthcare system in recent years.

Wi-Fi for all patients and visitors
In future, patients, relatives and visitors in all Andalusian hospitals will be able to access the internet without restrictions – free of charge and without any time limits.
The aim is to make hospital stays more comfortable for patients while also strengthening the digital infrastructure in the healthcare system.
Multi-million investment in hospital digitalisation
The project is backed by a comprehensive expansion plan:
- around a €18.5 million investment
- Installation of approximately 18,000 Wi-Fi access points
- comprehensive coverage of all public hospitals in Andalusia
This makes the project one of the largest technical modernisations in the regional healthcare sector.
Greater comfort for patients
The authorities are primarily focusing on the social and practical benefits:
- easier contact with family and friends
- reduced isolation during hospital stays
- access to entertainment, information and digital services
Especially for long-term patients, the free Wi-Fi is intended to bring a noticeable improvement in quality of life.
Part of a major digital strategy
The new Wi-Fi network is not a standalone project, but part of the “Andalucía Vuela” initiative. Thousands of public institutions in the region are already connected – including schools, museums, libraries and administrative buildings.
In total, the existing network already includes:
- over 122,000 Wi-Fi access points
- more than 10,000 connected public institutions
Security in focus
In parallel with the expansion of the infrastructure, the authorities are focusing on high security standards:
- encrypted networks
- continuous system monitoring
- regular security updates
This is intended to ensure stable and secure operation.
Goal: a digital flagship region in Europe
The regional government is pursuing a clear objective: Andalusia is to become one of Europe’s leading digital administrative and healthcare regions.
As a result, the healthcare system is intended to become not only more modern, but also more efficient and patient-friendly.
Pioneer for other regions
With free high-speed Wi-Fi in all hospitals, Andalusia is making a clear statement in favour of a digital future. The project combines technology, comfort and healthcare – and could serve as a model for other regions in Europe.
