In Spain, it’s once again a time for indulging, judging and voting: the national competition to find the country’s best bocadillo is currently attracting a great deal of attention – and Málaga plays a key role in it.

As part of the III Campeonato de España de Bocatas 2026, around 100 restaurants from all over Spain are competing against each other to win the title of the country’s best sandwich. The province of Málaga is also strongly represented: four eateries from the region have made it into the competition and are now hoping for national victory.

Tradition meets innovation

The competition clearly demonstrates how diverse Spain’s bocadillo culture has become. While some participants rely on classic recipes, others experiment with modern fusion ideas and international influences.

The following concepts are representing Málaga in the competition:

„Alma“ – Bocatería Florido

With the bocadillo “Alma”, Bocatería Florido focuses on a classic, robust composition. Grilled loin, Serrano ham, Manchego cheese, egg, peppers and mayonnaise form the base of this traditional sandwich, which deliberately emphasises authentic flavours.

„K-Tarsis“ – La Burguesita

A much more modern concept is presented by La Burguesita. The “K-Tarsis” bocadillo combines crispy chicken with cheddar, pickles and a special gochujang mayonnaise. The result is a mix of sweet, spicy and salty flavours – inspired by international street food cuisine.

„Serranito Malaka“ – Cafetería Arroyo

Cafetería Arroyo stays true to its regional approach. With the “Serranito Malaka”, it focuses on high-quality local products: mollete bread from Antequera, Iberian pork, Serrano ham and cheese from Málaga are at the heart of this traditional bocadillo.

„Campero Doble de Pollo“ – Barrio Pinto

Modern and particularly hearty, Barrio Pinto’s entry stands out. The “Campero Doble de Pollo” combines chicken, cheese, bacon and homemade sauces in a typical Málaga-style. A special addition is a meat broth for dipping, which adds an extra layer of flavour to the dish.

The public also plays a role in the decision

Participants are judged both by a professional jury and by the public. Guests receive a voting code when purchasing a bocadillo and can vote online for their favourite. The criteria include taste, bread quality, presentation, and the selection of ingredients.

Decision in May

The competition runs until the end of April 2026. The winners will then be announced in May. In addition to the national overall winner, regional winners will also be awarded.

Conclusion

With four creative entries, Málaga once again showcases its strong culinary identity. Between tradition and innovation, an exciting competition is emerging that is attracting attention far beyond the province – and once again proving that the bocadillo in Spain is far more than just a simple sandwich.
