Ayuso Publicly Thanks Messi
The news was shared by Isabel Díaz Ayuso on the platform X (formerly Twitter). She wrote: “Leo Messi has donated €80,000 towards the reconstruction of Sierra Oeste de Madrid. I would like to thank him for this gesture and tell him that the people of Madrid hope to welcome him soon and give him the applause he deserves.”
The donation will go towards the regional government’s official reconstruction fund, which was established in response to the devastating wildfires. Its aim is to support the rebuilding of destroyed homes as well as damaged infrastructure and public facilities.
Wildfires Leave a Trail of Devastation
The fires, which broke out in the Sierra Oeste west of Madrid at the end of July, are among the most severe wildfires the region has experienced in decades.
According to authorities, more than 27,000 hectares of forest and agricultural land were destroyed. A total of 17 municipalities were affected by the flames. Around 100 homes were completely destroyed, while more than 300 other buildings suffered damage.
The fires forced more than 55,000 people to leave their homes or remain temporarily confined indoors. It was only after days of operations involving thousands of firefighters that the blaze was brought under control. However, emergency crews continue to monitor isolated hotspots, as high summer temperatures could increase the risk of the fires reigniting.
Nearly €200,000 Raised in Donations
The regional government’s reconstruction fund was established on 29 July. Since then, nearly €200,000 in donations have already been received. Messi’s contribution of €80,000 therefore represents a significant share of the total amount raised so far.
According to Spanish media reports, representatives of the football star contacted the regional government directly in order to process the donation through the official fundraising channel.
Solidarity Beyond Club Rivalries
The gesture is particularly noteworthy given Messi’s sporting background. The Argentine is regarded as the greatest legend in FC Barcelona’s history and was one of Real Madrid’s biggest rivals for many years. Nevertheless, he has now chosen to provide financial support to the people of the Madrid region during a difficult time.
In Spain, the donation has therefore been met with a positive response across the political spectrum and regardless of sporting rivalries. Many see it as a sign that humanitarian aid is more important than club colours.
Messi Has Been Supporting Social Projects for Years
The latest donation adds to a long list of philanthropic activities by the World Cup winner. In the past, Messi has already supported numerous aid projects in Spain and Argentina.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated more than €1 million to hospitals in Barcelona and Argentina. In addition, his Leo Messi Foundation, founded in 2007, continues to support education, healthcare and sports projects for children and young people around the world.
Following the devastating floods in the Valencia region, Messi was also among the prominent figures who provided financial support for the reconstruction efforts. With his latest donation, the 39-year-old once again highlights his long-standing commitment to social causes that extends far beyond football.
