Spain Becomes Europe’s Leading Market for Alcohol-Free Beer

For years, ordering an alcohol-free beer in Spain felt like an explanation was required. You chose it if you were driving, taking medication or deliberately avoiding alcohol – often with a hint of apology. That perception has now disappeared. Alcohol-free beer is no longer a compromise; it is a conscious choice.

Spain has emerged as Europe’s largest consumer of alcohol-free beer, accounting for around 25% of total consumption across the continent – more than all of Latin America combined. This is not a short-lived trend, but a clear sign of a deeper shift in drinking habits.

According to the latest report from Cerveceros de España, sales of alcohol-free beer rose by 4% in 2024. The category now represents 14% of total beer consumption in Spain, rising to 16% within the home.

Less alcohol, not less beer

One common misconception is that alcohol-free beer is replacing traditional beer. In reality, the opposite is true. Ninety per cent of people who drink alcohol-free beer also consume beer with alcohol. The change is not about abstinence, but flexibility.

More than four in ten Spaniards now regularly drink alcohol-free beer, with responsible driving cited as one of the main reasons. Socialising, going out for drinks and sharing time with friends remain central to Spanish culture – alcohol is simply no longer a requirement.

This shift is particularly visible in the hospitality sector, where alcohol-free beer has moved from the margins to become a standard offering on menus nationwide. Spain’s approach is increasingly seen as a reference point abroad and is even being analysed by institutions such as Harvard University as an example of moderate consumption integrated into everyday social life.

An industry adapting to new habits

This evolution contrasts sharply with developments elsewhere. Germany, long considered Europe’s beer heartland, has recorded its lowest beer consumption in 30 years. Spain, by contrast, continues to strengthen its position.

With 41 million hectolitres produced annually, Spain remains the second-largest beer producer in Europe, behind Germany and ahead of countries such as the United Kingdom and Poland.

A key pillar of the Spanish economy

Beyond cultural significance, beer remains a major economic force in Spain. The sector:

  • supports more than 540,000 jobs, two thirds of them in hospitality

  • contributes €17.2 billion to the national economy (1.3% of GDP)

  • generates over €6.5 billion in tax revenue

  • reaches €5.7 billion in manufacturing turnover

These figures underline the structural importance of an industry that is successfully adapting to changing consumer behaviour.

Household consumption: a more nuanced picture

Not all indicators point in the same direction. According to the Annual Food Consumption Report published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, household consumption of alcohol-free beer fell by 4.3% in 2024, standing at 3.03 litres per capita. Even so, alcohol-free beer still accounts for 16.1% of total household beer consumption.

The highest consumption levels are found among:

  • people over the age of 65, with up to 5.6 litres per capita

  • adult couples without children

  • households with a middle socio-economic profile

Regionally, Extremadura records the highest per-capita consumption, followed by Andalusia, Madrid and Galicia.

Conclusion

Spain is not drinking less beer – it is drinking more consciously. Alcohol-free beer has moved from exception to norm: socially accepted, economically significant and firmly embedded in everyday life.

What was once seen as a restriction is now part of a broader cultural shift. And all signs suggest that this change is here to stay.
