While large parts of Spain are suffering under an exceptional heatwave in the summer of 2026, with temperatures exceeding 40°C recorded in many areas, there is one place where the summer heat seems almost forgotten. High in the mountains of Andalusia lies a village that offers a striking contrast to the country’s sweltering regions, with pleasantly cool temperatures, fresh mountain air and even frosty nights in winter.

The village in question is Capileira in the province of Granada. This traditional mountain village in the Alpujarras is considered one of the coolest places in Spain and is becoming a popular retreat for many travellers looking to escape the extreme temperatures this summer.

Capileira: A cool refuge in the mountains of Andalusia

Capileira is located at an altitude of around 1,500 metres on the southern edge of the Sierra Nevada and is one of the highest villages in Spain. While temperatures in the lower-lying areas of Andalusia regularly exceed 40°C, Capileira enjoys a significantly milder climate.

The village’s high altitude means that temperatures remain relatively pleasant even during intense heatwaves. Daytime temperatures often stay below 25°C, while nights are significantly cooler, providing a refreshing respite from the heat.

Especially in August, when cities such as Seville, Córdoba and Málaga are battling extreme heat, Capileira offers a welcome alternative for those looking to escape the soaring temperatures.

A village with an extraordinary climate

The reason for the lower temperatures is primarily due to the village’s unique geographical location. Temperatures decrease with every additional metre of altitude, as air at higher elevations stores less heat. At the same time, its position on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada provides better air circulation and cooler nights.

While hot air masses from North Africa cause extreme temperatures in the plains of Andalusia, the mountain regions benefit from significantly milder conditions.

Capileira is therefore an example of just how dramatically the climate can vary within Spain. Some of Europe’s hottest regions are located only a few hours away, while the mountains offer an almost alpine summer experience.

Tradition, nature and relaxation away from the coast

However, Capileira is known for more than just its climate. The village impresses visitors with its traditional architecture, whitewashed houses, narrow streets and a landscape considered among the most beautiful in Andalusia.

The Alpujarras are characterised by spectacular mountain landscapes, ancient hiking trails and a centuries-old culture. Visitors can set out on numerous walks from Capileira and explore the unique natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada.

The region is particularly popular among travellers who are not looking exclusively for a beach holiday in summer, but instead prefer peace, nature and more comfortable temperatures.

Perfect alternative during Spain’s heatwaves

As the number of intense heatwaves continues to rise, Capileira is attracting increasing attention. While health authorities across Spain are warning about the dangers of extreme temperatures and urging older people and those with chronic illnesses to take precautions, many holidaymakers are deliberately seeking out cooler destinations within the country.

Mountain villages such as Capileira show that Spain still offers places where visitors can enjoy a pleasant stay even during the hottest months of the year. The combination of high altitude, stunning nature and a milder climate makes the village a unique summer retreat.

Climate change is transforming Spain’s summers

Meteorologists have observed for years that heatwaves in Spain are becoming more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting. Rising temperatures are leading more and more people to look for ways to escape the summer heat.

While coastal areas and cities are increasingly struggling with high temperatures, tropical nights and health risks, higher-altitude regions could play an even greater role as climate refuges in the future.

Capileira represents a new approach to summer holidays: moving away from extreme heat and towards mountains, nature and cooler temperatures.

A hidden gem to escape the summer heat

Capileira is an extraordinary place in Spain – not because of its beaches or nightlife, but because of its pleasant climate in the heart of one of Europe’s hottest regions.

As Spain faces record-breaking temperatures in the summer of 2026, the mountain village in Granada offers a rare opportunity: a cool refuge where visitors can enjoy the beauty of Andalusia without being exposed to extreme heat.
