The international magazine Time Out has set out to answer a simple but far-reaching question: which cities make their residents genuinely happy? The result is a global ranking of the happiest cities in the world, based on a survey of more than 18,000 people.

Participants were asked to rate their city according to key factors such as quality of life, social connections, cultural offerings, green spaces and overall wellbeing.

Madrid among the world’s top 10 happiest cities

The highest-ranking Spanish city is Madrid, which secures a place among the top ten worldwide. Spain’s capital stands out for its intense social life, an exceptionally rich cultural and leisure scene, and its strong tradition of using public space as a meeting point.

Street cafés, lively neighbourhoods, well-used parks and a year-round cultural programme shape daily life in the city. Despite its size, Madrid is frequently described by residents as approachable, vibrant and full of life — a combination that, according to Time Out, plays a decisive role in its high levels of satisfaction.

Valencia: Mediterranean quality of life on the global stage

The second Spanish city to appear in the ranking is Valencia, placed 19th worldwide. Its presence on the list confirms its reputation as a city with a high quality of life and strong sense of wellbeing.

A mild Mediterranean climate, urban beaches, striking architecture and generous green spaces such as the Turia Gardenscontribute to a relaxed daily rhythm. Valencia combines a slower pace of life with a dynamic cultural and gastronomic scene — an appealing balance that resonates strongly with its residents.

Happiness takes many forms

The Time Out ranking makes one thing clear: there is no single formula for urban happiness. Alongside Madrid and Valencia, the list features a wide range of cities from across the globe, including Glasgow, Dubai, Marrakech, Hanoi, Chiang Mai, Sydney and Porto.

What these cities share is not their size or economic power, but their ability to make quality of life tangible in everyday living.

Spain as an international benchmark for quality of life

The inclusion of two Spanish cities among the world’s happiest once again underlines Spain’s reputation as a country with exceptional urban liveability. Rather than hard economic indicators, factors such as social interaction, climate, leisure culture and the active use of public space play a defining role.

The ranking sends a clear message: urban happiness flourishes where daily life, surroundings and human relationships are in balance.
