Mosquitoes in Spain: Why some people get bitten more often – and how to protect yourself effectively

As soon as temperatures rise, they are back: mosquitoes. In the summer months in particular, these annoying insects are part of everyday life in many regions of Spain. However, while some people are hardly bitten at all, others seem to act like a “magnet” for the pests. Experts now explain why this is the case – and which protective measures really work.

Why mosquitoes prefer certain people

Mosquitoes do not choose their victims at random. According to experts, the insects are guided by a combination of physical and chemical factors. These include, among other things, an individual’s body odour, the composition of their skin chemistry, and the amount of carbon dioxide they exhale. Body temperature and sweat also play an important role, as mosquitoes can more easily detect warm and moist skin surfaces.

In addition, genetic predisposition also appears to play a crucial role, as some people naturally produce substances on their skin that are particularly attractive to mosquitoes.

What happens in the body during a mosquito bite

A mosquito bite is not caused by a traditional “sting”, but by the insect sucking blood. In the process, the mosquito injects saliva into the skin, which prevents blood from clotting and makes the feeding process possible in the first place. The human immune system then reacts to these foreign substances, leading to typical symptoms such as itching, redness and swelling.

In some cases, stronger allergic reactions may also occur, particularly in sensitive individuals.

How to protect yourself indoors

In warm regions of Spain in particular, protecting yourself indoors is especially important. Mosquito nets on windows and doors are considered one of the most effective physical barriers to prevent insects from entering. In addition, electric vaporizers or plug-in devices can help keep mosquitoes away.

Fans are also surprisingly effective, as the airflow makes it harder for insects to land and locate their targets. It is equally important to avoid standing water in the surrounding area, as it provides ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

Effective skin protection

The most reliable protection directly on the body is insect repellent, particularly those containing DEET. These chemical repellents specifically target mosquitoes’ sensory systems and effectively keep them away. Alternatively, natural products such as citronella or catnip oil are also used, although they generally have a shorter duration of effect and therefore need to be applied more frequently to provide a similar level of protection.

What doesn’t help

Many home remedies are widely used, but they do not provide reliable protection against mosquito bites. Substances such as vinegar, toothpaste or alcohol are often mentioned as quick fixes, but in practice they have no effective repellent effect. On the contrary, they can further irritate the skin and even worsen the reaction after a bite.

Why only female mosquitoes bite

An often overlooked fact is that only female mosquitoes bite humans. The reason lies in reproduction, as they need blood to support the development of their eggs. The proteins and nutrients contained in blood are essential for this reproductive process.

Summer in Spain: ideal conditions for mosquitoes

The summer months in Spain provide ideal conditions for mosquitoes to multiply rapidly. High temperatures, humidity, standing water sources and increased outdoor activity all contribute to the insects spreading particularly strongly. As a result, the impact is especially high every year in coastal regions and tourist areas.
