Spain’s National Police are investigating an unusual series of around 30 births in the province of Burgos after hospital staff identified a striking pattern shared by all the cases

According to several Spanish media reports, most of the mothers are Brazilian nationals. Many of them normally reside in Belgium or other northern European countries, where they reportedly received prenatal care before travelling to Spain to give birth.
One of the most remarkable similarities is that the same man was listed as the alleged father of all the newborns and was also reported to have accompanied several of the women during hospital visits. In addition, many of the mothers repeatedly provided one of two residential addresses in the Las Merindades area of Burgos Province—one in Medina de Pomar and the other in Villarcayo. These recurring details prompted staff at Burgos University Hospital (HUBU) to alert the National Police.
The births are reported to have taken place between May and July. Investigators are now examining whether the similarities point to an organised scheme or whether there is a legitimate explanation for the repeated pattern.
Police are reviewing the documentation submitted in each case, including paternity declarations and registered addresses, to determine whether any administrative or legal irregularities may have occurred. At this stage, however, no arrests have been made, and no criminal offences have been confirmed.
Authorities stress that the investigation is still at an early stage and that all possible explanations remain under consideration. The purpose of the inquiry is to establish the facts and determine whether the repeated similarities are purely coincidental or the result of an organised operation.
The case has attracted considerable attention across Spain because of the unusually high number of births sharing the same characteristics within such a short period. Whether the investigation ultimately uncovers wrongdoing or concludes that the cases have a lawful explanation remains to be seen. Until then, all those involved are presumed innocent.
