The death toll from the devastating railway collision in the province of Toledo is now reported to have reached at least ten, as emergency services continue their response to one of Spain’s most serious rail accidents in recent years.

According to government sources cited by El País, at least ten people have died in the crash, although the authorities have yet to release a definitive official casualty figure.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning when two high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided near Urda, in the province of Toledo.

The impact caused two carriages to derail and plunge down an embankment, leaving emergency teams facing a major rescue operation.

With the full extent of the disaster still being assessed, concerns remain that the number of fatalities could increase.

Emergency services, firefighters and medical personnel have been deployed to the scene, while the authorities work to establish the number of passengers affected.

The high-speed railway connection between Madrid and Andalusia remains suspended, disrupting one of Spain’s busiest transport corridors.

Spain shaken by another railway tragedy

The collision comes just months after the deadly railway disaster in Adamuz, Córdoba, in January, which claimed 45 lives.

The latest accident has once again raised questions about railway safety in Spain, although investigators have yet to establish what caused today’s collision.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has expressed his shock at the tragedy and offered his solidarity to the victims and their families.

As rescue operations continue, Spain awaits further information about the scale of the disaster.

Spain Press will continue to follow developments as new information becomes available.
