The state-owned railway infrastructure operator Adif confirmed that two trains had been involved in what it described as a rear-end collision. The circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be established.
According to Spain’s emergency services, the collision occurred at approximately 8.54am on Wednesday.
Emergency helicopters and rescue teams deployed
A substantial emergency response was launched following the incident, with firefighters from Alcázar de San Juan and Orgaz dispatched to the scene alongside Civil Protection teams from surrounding municipalities.
Three medical helicopters and two mobile intensive care units were also deployed.
The scale of the emergency response has raised concerns about the potential consequences of the collision, although authorities have not yet confirmed whether any passengers or railway staff have been injured.
There is also no official information regarding the extent of the damage sustained by either train.
High-speed rail services to Andalusia suspended
Adif confirmed that high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia had been suspended as a direct consequence of the incident.
The Madrid–Seville corridor is one of Spain’s most important high-speed railway routes, connecting the capital with southern Spain and providing onward services to destinations across Andalusia.
The disruption could affect passengers travelling between Madrid and Seville, as well as those using other high-speed connections serving the region.
No estimated time has been given for the resumption of services.
Passengers planning to travel are advised to check the latest information from their train operator before setting off.
Cause of collision remains unknown
The circumstances that led to the two trains colliding have not yet been established.
Authorities have not provided details about the speed of the trains at the time of the incident or whether technical problems, signalling failures or other factors may have played a role.
Investigations into the collision are expected to establish the sequence of events.
For now, emergency services remain focused on the situation at the scene, while railway authorities assess the disruption to one of Spain’s busiest high-speed corridors.
Spain Press will continue to follow developments and update this report as further verified information becomes available.
