Spain is once again making a strong statement in terms of quality of life: according to a recent Eurostat study, the Madrid region has the highest life expectancy in all of Europe. With an average of around 86 years, the Spanish capital region ranks ahead of all other European regions.

The findings underline Spain’s reputation as one of the countries with the highest life expectancy worldwide – and place particular focus on Madrid as a model region.
Spain at the top of Europe
Alongside Madrid, other European regions also rank among the leaders, including northern Italy, parts of Finland, as well as Navarra in northern Spain. Nevertheless, Madrid clearly stands out from the competition.
Experts say this is no coincidence: for years, Spain has been among the countries with the best health and quality-of-life indicators in Europe.
Why do people in Madrid live so long?
The study and experts cite several factors behind the high life expectancy:
Mediterranean lifestyle
Diet plays a central role – plenty of fresh vegetables, fish, olive oil, and few heavily processed foods are considered beneficial for health.
Stable healthcare system
Spain’s public healthcare system is considered well developed and accessible to large parts of the population.
Climate and everyday life
Many hours of sunshine, mild winters, and an overall active lifestyle have a positive impact on health.
Social structures
Strong family ties and social connections are also considered an important factor in quality of life and well-being.
Spain remains a European leader
Not only does Madrid stand out: overall, Spain is also among the countries with the highest life expectancy in Europe. However, there are regional differences within the country, which can be attributed to social and economic factors.
Light and shadow
Despite the positive figures, experts stress that high life expectancy does not automatically apply equally to all regions. Income, access to healthcare, and living conditions remain decisive factors.
Conclusion
Madrid is emblematic of a way of life that combines health, social stability, and quality of life. The new study therefore confirms once again that Spain is among the countries where people live the longest in Europe – and Madrid sets the benchmark.
