According to Spain’s rail infrastructure operator Adif, high-speed train Iryo No. 6189 derailed on the Málaga–Madrid Puerta de Atocha line at a set of points near the entrance to Adamuz. The train was diverted onto an adjacent track, where it collided with a Renfe service (No. 2384, Madrid–Huelva). Both trains subsequently derailed.

The last carriage of the Iryo train was the worst affected and reportedly overturned. Several passengers had to be rescued by emergency services. The crash led to the complete suspension of rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia, particularly on the high-speed network.

Andalusian emergency services were alerted immediately. The regional minister responsible for the interior and emergency management, Antonio Sanz, confirmed that all available resources had been deployed and that the situation was being continuously coordinated.

A passenger travelling on the Iryo train told Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE that the impact “felt like an earthquake”. Following the collision, train staff made announcements asking for assistance from any medically trained passengers on board. Some evacuations were carried out through the carriage windows.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. The relevant authorities have opened an investigation, and further information is expected in the coming hours.
