Following the severe earthquakes in Venezuela, the Spanish government has confirmed the death of two Spanish citizens. At the same time, around 80 other Spaniards are still missing or have not yet been located. Authorities expect that the number of those affected may still change in the coming days, as the situation on the ground remains unclear.

Severe destruction following multiple earthquakes
The earthquakes shook large parts of Venezuela and caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. Densely populated areas have been particularly affected, with numerous residential buildings and public facilities collapsing. In addition to the direct damage, disrupted communication and transport routes are making rescue operations considerably more difficult.
According to local authorities, many areas are currently only partially accessible, which is further slowing down the search for those trapped and missing.
Spanish citizens among those affected
The Spanish Foreign Ministry has now confirmed two fatalities among Spanish nationals. In addition, the ministry is working together with local authorities to determine the whereabouts of around 80 other people who are believed to have been in Venezuela at the time of the earthquakes.
According to current information, these include both travellers and Spanish citizens residing in the country. Consular emergency teams have been activated to establish contact with relatives and gather information.
Large-scale rescue operation under difficult conditions
Search and rescue operations are continuing at full pace. International and local emergency teams are working to recover those trapped and stabilise the situation in the affected regions. However, coordination efforts are proving difficult due to damaged infrastructure and disrupted communication networks.
Authorities are warning that the situation remains highly dynamic and that the numbers of casualties and missing persons may still change.
Humanitarian situation worsening
Independent of the Spanish nationals affected, local and international organisations are reporting a severe humanitarian crisis. According to reports, there are numerous dead and injured, while many people still have no access to medical care or safe shelter.
Aid organisations are preparing further support, but are facing logistical challenges in some regions.
Spain activates crisis response mechanisms
The Spanish government has activated its crisis response structures and is in close contact with the Venezuelan authorities. The aim is to obtain clarity as quickly as possible about the fate of those missing and to support affected citizens.
Diplomatic missions on the ground are also working intensively to compile information and inform relatives in Spain.
