Spain is set to experience an unusually cold Christmas this year. After a relatively mild and overcast Christmas Eve, meteorologists are forecasting a sharp drop in temperatures on Christmas Day. In some areas, temperatures could fall by as much as 10°C below the seasonal average, bringing icy conditions to large parts of the country.

According to Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, 25 December will be marked by the arrival of a cold polar air mass originating over the Russian plains near Siberia. While the cold front is expected to hit northern Spain most severely, a significant drop in temperatures will also be felt across the rest of the country.
Weather forecast for Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve, conditions are expected to be slightly milder compared with previous days. Temperatures will rise modestly, although skies will remain largely cloudy. Heavy rainfall is forecast in southern Spain, particularly in Andalusia. Snowfall will be limited to higher mountain areas.
In Mediterranean cities such as Alicante and Castellón, temperatures could reach up to 16°C. Meanwhile, the Canary Islands are expected to see stable weather, with moderate winds and little variation in temperatures.
Cold air mass arrives on Christmas Day
A clear turning point in weather conditions is forecast for 25 December. A strong north-easterly cold air flow will move into Spain, causing a dramatic drop in temperatures. In cities such as Madrid, daytime highs are expected to remain below 5°C, while locations including Segovia and Lugo may see maximum temperatures of just 3°C.This polar-arctic air mass is also expected to bring widespread frost, particularly at higher elevations, where snowfall cannot be ruled out.
Wider impact across Europe
The cold snap will not be confined to Spain. Large parts of Europe are also set to be affected, as a strong Scandinavian blocking system influences weather patterns across the continent. Cold air is expected to spread across southern Europe and parts of the Mediterranean, pointing towards a notably colder winter period.
