Spain has achieved a significant success in road safety: In July 2026, the country recorded one of the lowest numbers of road fatalities ever registered for the month of July since official records began. According to Spain’s traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), it was the second-best July result in the history of the statistics.

The development is particularly noteworthy, as July is traditionally one of the busiest months of the year on Spain’s roads. With the start of the summer holidays, the number of vehicles travelling across the country increases significantly. Millions of people head to the coast, travel to holiday destinations or visit family members throughout Spain. Despite this high level of mobility, the number of fatal accidents has remained at a historically low level.

Summer traffic remains a major challenge

The summer months present particular challenges for the Spanish authorities every year. During the holiday season, traffic on motorways, country roads and routes leading to popular holiday destinations increases significantly. Roads heading towards the Mediterranean coast, Andalusia and the island regions are among the busiest and most heavily used transport routes.

For this reason, the DGT regularly carries out special summer traffic campaigns. These include increased checks, additional monitoring through speed cameras and information campaigns designed to raise drivers’ awareness of potential risks.

For summer 2026, the authorities once again expected more than 100 million long-distance journeys on Spain’s roads. The fact that the number of fatalities nevertheless remained low is seen by experts as a sign of the progress made in recent years.

Stricter rules and improved enforcement are showing results

Spain has fundamentally transformed its road safety policy over the past decades. While the country was once among the European nations with particularly high numbers of road fatalities, it is now considered one of the countries with significantly improved road safety figures.

A wide range of measures have played a decisive role in this progress, including stricter speed controls, Spain’s driving licence points system, more intensive alcohol and drug testing, and modern traffic management systems. Improved vehicle safety standards and extensive prevention campaigns also play an important role.

In particular, the combination of stricter regulations, tougher penalties and greater awareness among road users has helped to significantly reduce the number of serious traffic accidents in the long term.

Speeding, alcohol and distraction remain the main dangers

Despite the positive development, certain risks remain key causes of serious road accidents. These include excessive speed, drink-driving, fatigue and distractions caused by smartphones.

Accidents on rural roads also remain a major challenge. Although fewer vehicles use these roads compared with motorways, many serious accidents occur outside major cities.

For this reason, the authorities continue to focus on prevention and awareness campaigns. The aim is not only to reduce the number of fatalities, but also to achieve a long-term reduction in serious injuries.

Mixed picture in 2026

The July figures represent a major success, but the overall development throughout the year presents a more complex picture. Individual months can be heavily affected by serious accidents involving multiple fatalities.

For this reason, road safety experts do not focus solely on individual monthly figures, but also examine long-term trends. The current development shows that Spain has made significant progress in road safety, even though challenges still remain.

Spain is now among Europe’s safer countries for road travel

Just a few decades ago, Spain was known for having a significantly higher number of road fatalities. However, through investment in infrastructure, more modern vehicles and stricter traffic regulations, the country has made substantial improvements.

The historic July 2026 figures highlight this transformation. Despite a growing population, increasing tourism and more vehicles on the roads, Spain is increasingly succeeding in making road travel safer.

Greater safety for residents and millions of tourists

This development is also of great importance for tourism. Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world and welcomes millions of international visitors every year, many of whom travel by hire car, motorhome or their own vehicles.

Fewer road deaths do not only represent a positive statistic, but also mean greater safety for residents, holidaymakers and everyone who uses Spain’s roads on a daily basis.

July 2026 therefore marks another important milestone: Spain is showing that increased mobility and greater road safety can go hand in hand.
