Train crash in Adamuz: 43 dead, 42 identified as investigation continues

Investigations are continuing into the severe double train crash near Adamuz, one of the deadliest rail accidents in Spain in recent years. According to the latest official figures, 43 people have lost their lives, with 42 victims already identified. Authorities have stressed that the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

Along the affected stretch of railway, clearance and technical operations remain under way. Emergency services and specialist teams from the infrastructure manager Adif continue to work on site. The final derailed carriage of the Iryo train has now been removed, although parts of the line remain closed.

Updated casualty figures

According to the authorities, 28 of the fatalities were in the Alvia train. Six victims were recovered in the area of the tracks, and six more in the Iryo train. Three bodies were found between the two accident sites. The exact sequence of events is currently being reconstructed.

Investigations ongoing

The inquiry is examining multiple factors, including technical systems, signalling and safety infrastructure, as well as operational procedures. Investigators have underlined that no conclusions should be drawn at this stage, and that all possible scenarios remain under review.

In recent days, several senior political figures have visited the area, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Andalusian regional president Juan Manuel Moreno, and Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Spain’s King and Queen have also expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

For the residents of Adamuz and those affected across the country, the focus now remains on establishing the facts. When definitive findings will be published is still unclear.
