Relations between Spain and the United States are facing a new test. US President Donald Trump has announced plans to restrict or potentially end trade relations with Spain. The dispute centres on defence spending within NATO.

Trump strongly criticised Spain and described the country as a “lost cause”. According to his statements, he has ordered measures against economic cooperation with Spain. The remarks have attracted attention both in Madrid and across Europe, as Spain and the United States have maintained close economic and political relations for decades.

The dispute once again highlights tensions between the US administration and several European allies over the question of how much each NATO member should contribute financially to collective defence.

Trigger: Dispute over defence spending

The focus of the dispute is Trump’s demand that NATO countries invest significantly more money in their defence. The US president is calling on alliance members to increase defence spending to as much as five per cent of gross domestic product.

Spain, however, rejects this target. The government in Madrid argues that its security commitments can also be fulfilled with lower levels of spending. According to the Spanish government, defence expenditure has already increased significantly in recent years.

Trump nevertheless views Spain as a special case and accuses the country of not taking sufficient responsibility within the alliance. While other European countries have expanded their military budgets more significantly, Spain continues to fall short of his expectations.

Spain rejects criticism

The Spanish government responded cautiously to the harsh remarks from Washington. Madrid emphasises that relations with the United States remain close and are not defined solely by individual political disputes.

The government of Pedro Sánchez points out that Spain is an important partner of the United States, both economically and in terms of security policy. At the same time, Madrid emphasises that trade matters are regulated within the European Union and that individual member states cannot be treated independently of the EU’s common trade policy.

Spanish representatives also emphasise that cooperation between the two countries does not take place solely at government level. Numerous companies, investors and workers have benefited from the close economic ties between Spain and the United States for many years.

What would be the consequences of a trade suspension?

An actual breakdown of trade relations between Spain and the United States would be an extraordinary step and could have significant economic consequences.

The United States is one of Spain’s most important trading partners outside Europe. Numerous industries are closely interconnected, including the energy sector and renewable technologies, the automotive industry, aerospace, agriculture and food production, the chemical sector, as well as various areas of the services and tourism industries.

A trade suspension could affect Spanish companies that rely on access to the US market. At the same time, American companies operating in Spain or benefiting from European supply chains would also be impacted.

Experts point out, however, that a complete termination of trade would be difficult to implement in practice. Spain is part of the European Union, and trade policy towards third countries is generally handled at EU level.

Conflict with implications for Europe

The dispute between Trump and Spain is part of a broader debate within NATO. For years, the United States has been calling on European allies to increase their defence spending. Many European countries have already expanded their military budgets, but they continue to differ in terms of the pace and scale of their investments.

Spain occupies a particular position within Europe. Although the country is a NATO member and participates in international missions, it has traditionally followed a more cautious approach when it comes to military spending.

The dispute could therefore also have an impact on discussions within the EU. Other member states are closely monitoring how the conflict between Washington and Madrid develops.

Economic uncertainty for businesses

For companies on both sides of the Atlantic, the current situation is creating uncertainty above all. Many businesses plan for the long term and depend on stable political conditions.

Should new trade restrictions or punitive measures actually be introduced, certain industries could face higher costs, delays or changes to their supply chains.

Export-oriented companies that benefit heavily from access to the US market would be particularly affected. At the same time, a trade dispute could also influence investment decisions.

Spain and the United States remain closely connected

Despite the current tensions, relations between Spain and the United States remain extensive. Millions of people are connected through economic, cultural and social ties that have developed between the two countries over many years.

The United States is one of the most important countries of origin for international visitors to Spain, while numerous Spanish companies are active in the American market.

Whether the threats will actually lead to concrete measures or are primarily intended as political pressure remains to be seen. The key factor will be how both governments respond in the coming weeks.

Dispute with an uncertain outcome

The conflict between Donald Trump and Spain shows how closely security and economic policy are now interconnected. What began as a dispute over NATO spending has developed into a diplomatic confrontation that could also have economic consequences.

For Spain, the stakes are high. On the one hand, Madrid wants to maintain its own defence policy; on the other hand, stable relations with the United States remain an important factor for the economy and international cooperation.

The coming weeks will show whether the conflict continues to escalate or whether both sides find a way to reduce tensions once again.
