The Spanish property market is seeing a new trend: the Dutch are now the third largest group of foreign buyers of property in Spain. This development has gained significance in recent years and could be attributed to a variety of factors that are making Spain increasingly attractive to Dutch buyers.

A market in change: The Dutch on the rise

Already known for their love of sunny destinations and an affordable lifestyle, the Dutch are increasingly looking for a second home or even a permanent residence in Spain. Last year, the Dutch even overtook other European buyer groups, securing their place behind the British and Germans.

According to the latest market data, Dutch buyers have seen a remarkable increase in property purchases in recent months, making them the third largest group of foreign buyers. The property market in Spain appears to have adapted to the specific needs of this group – from holiday homes on the coast to long-term properties in less touristy, yet equally attractive regions of the country.

Why Spain? The reasons for the growing interest

There are several reasons why more and more Dutch people are investing in Spain. One of the main factors is, of course, the pleasant climate, which is particularly appealing in the southern regions of Spain. For many Dutch buyers, this means they can create a second home in a country with sunshine, sea, and a high quality of life.

In addition, Spain’s economic attractiveness plays a key role. Properties in popular coastal regions such as the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, and the Balearic Islands are still affordable compared to many other Western European markets. These regions offer Dutch buyers not only sunshine but also good infrastructure and accessibility.

Another reason is the growing demand for long-term stays. More and more Dutch people are choosing to live in Spain not just during the summer months, but are considering relocating permanently. The country offers a high quality of life, with a wide range of educational, healthcare, and leisure opportunities, which are increasingly attractive to a growing number of people.

Dutch people and property in Spain: Regional preferences

Dutch buyers have clearly defined their preferred regions. The coastal areas of Spain remain particularly popular, including the Costa Brava and Costa Blanca, known for their beaches and picturesque landscapes. However, the market has also seen an increase in Dutch buyers in city centres like Málaga and in less touristy, but still beautiful, regions like Castellón and Murcia.

The rising demand has also had an impact on property prices. In some of these areas, prices have already increased, as demand from both Dutch and international buyers continues to intensify. However, for many, Spain remains a relatively affordable destination compared to other countries with a high standard of living.

The outlook: What lies ahead for the Spanish property market?

The increasing number of Dutch buyers highlights a positive trend for the Spanish property market. The market has become increasingly internationalised, and it is expected that other European buyer groups, such as the Belgians and French, will continue to grow in significance. For Spain, this could represent a long-term economic opportunity, especially with regard to international property trade.

But the question remains: Will this trend continue? Experts are confident that the Dutch market will remain an important element of the Spanish property market in the coming years, especially if economic conditions stay stable and the demand for holiday homes and long-term stays continues to grow.
