A new DANA could change the weather in Spain starting Tuesday: These are the regions to watch

Following a relatively stable spell of weather, conditions in Spain could change significantly starting Tuesday, November 3. Meteorologists are monitoring the potential formation of a new DANA, which could bring heavy rainfall and thunderstorms – particularly to the Mediterranean region and the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, it remains unclear how this low-pressure system will develop and which regions will ultimately be most affected.

According to current meteorological assessments, the latest weather models point to increasing atmospheric instability at the beginning of next week. This could be driven by a DANA – an isolated high-altitude depression – that might form near the Iberian Peninsula or become stationary there.

Until now, Spain has been under the influence of a high-pressure system that has ensured predominantly stable weather conditions. This system may now gradually shift, paving the way for more changeable weather. Consequently, meteorologists anticipate an increasing likelihood of precipitation and thunderstorms starting Tuesday.

Mediterranean region and Northeast in particular focus

Meteorologists are currently keeping a particularly close watch on developments in the Mediterranean region. The Balearic Islands, as well as parts of the eastern and northeastern regions, could be affected by this change in the weather. Heavy localized downpours and thunderstorms are possible in these areas. According to current forecasts, the occurrence of prolonged precipitation also cannot be ruled out.

As the week progresses, the weather disturbance could have a more significant impact on the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Consequently, changes in weather conditions are possible there between Wednesday and Friday. More humid air currents arriving from the Mediterranean region could facilitate additional precipitation.

However, it is not yet possible to reliably determine the extent to which individual regions will be affected. The precise position of the DANA and the prevailing wind currents play a decisive role in this.

Warm Mediterranean could promote precipitation

Another factor is the comparatively high water temperature of the Mediterranean Sea. In some areas, the water temperature is currently up to three degrees above the level typical for this time of year. This warm sea can release additional moisture into the atmosphere. When these moist air masses encounter cold air in the upper layers of the atmosphere, powerful thunderstorms can develop. Under the right conditions, this can also lead to intense precipitation within a short period of time.

Especially along the Mediterranean coast, this interplay could lead to increased precipitation. However, the actual intensity of the rainfall will depend on how the low-pressure system develops further.

Meteorologists urge caution regarding the forecasts

Despite indications of a potential change in the weather, the forecast remains subject to significant uncertainty. In particular, the final position and the path of the DANA have yet to be determined. Even minor shifts in atmospheric currents could result in precipitation being distributed differently than currently projected.

It is also not yet clear which areas will actually be affected by particularly heavy rainfall. The current calculations therefore represent one possible scenario and should not be equated with a specific severe weather warning.

The coming days are likely to be crucial for gaining a more precise assessment of the weather situation. In particular, residents and visitors in the Mediterranean region and the Balearic Islands should keep track of further forecasts and any potential warnings issued by the Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET.

Whether the new DANA will actually bring about a significant change in the weather remains to be seen over the coming days.
