In connection with the incident on the MV Hondius, another medically relevant case has been confirmed or further substantiated in Spain. A Spanish passenger, who was previously evacuated from the cruise ship and brought to Madrid, has tested positive for hantavirus at the Gómez Ulla Military Hospital. The result is based on a PCR test and is currently being verified through additional analyses.

The patient is part of a group of 14 Spanish returnees who were placed under quarantine following the events on the ship and have since been under close medical monitoring.

Patient in Isolation – Condition Stable

According to medical sources, the patient remains in isolation at a hospital in Madrid. His condition is currently considered stable. The patient is either asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic and is being closely monitored, while additional laboratory tests are underway to confirm the findings definitively.

Doctors emphasise that this is still a case requiring confirmation in several stages, as PCR results can vary in the early stages of an infection.

Part of a Monitored Returnee Group

The case is part of a broader medical monitoring programme for all passengers who returned to Spain in connection with the MV Hondius. The entire group was isolated upon arrival and has been regularly tested since then.

According to current information from the health authorities, the remaining members of the group have so far tested negative or show no concerning findings. Nevertheless, quarantine remains in place until all medical protocols have been completed.

Health Authorities Take a Cautious Approach

Spanish health authorities are continuing to closely monitor the case and are working in coordination with international agencies. The aim is to fully trace any possible chains of infection and rule out any potential spread at an early stage.

Officially, it is currently assumed that there is no risk to the general public. The measures are focused exclusively on the individuals affected and their immediate contacts.

International Context of the Outbreak

The Madrid case is part of a larger international incident that is already affecting several countries. The MV Hondius is at the centre of ongoing investigations, as several suspected and confirmed cases have been reported on board in recent days.

European health authorities are coordinating their response and exchanging data in order to better assess the course of the outbreak and minimise further risks.

Further Tests Pending

In the coming days, additional laboratory results are expected to provide clarity on how the case should ultimately be classified. Only then will a decision be made on how long the quarantine for the patient and the other returnees will remain in place.

Until then, the patient remains under strict medical observation at the military hospital.
