Nearly 40°C in September: Saharan heat returns to Spain

Summer in Spain is far from over. A surge of exceptionally warm air from North Africa is set to push temperatures sharply higher again, creating a striking contrast between relatively cool mornings and intense afternoon heat.

Those heading out early in the morning may still need a light jacket in some parts of Spain. Just a few hours later, however, conditions will feel completely different. Temperatures are expected to climb well above 30°C across large areas, with the hottest parts of the country potentially reaching between 38°C and almost 40°C.

The latest spell of heat is being driven by a ridge of very warm air moving northwards from Africa towards the Iberian Peninsula, effectively bringing another burst of high summer to Spain in the middle of September.

Southern and inland Spain face the highest temperatures

The strongest heat is expected across Andalusia and other parts of southern and inland Spain, where afternoon temperatures could once again approach the 40°C mark.

Coastal areas are generally expected to remain somewhat cooler thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean and Atlantic. However, higher humidity can make temperatures feel considerably more uncomfortable, even when the thermometer remains below the levels recorded inland.

For foreign residents and visitors, particularly those from Britain, Germany and northern Europe, the contrast can be striking. While September is already bringing distinctly autumnal conditions to many parts of northern Europe, large areas of Spain remain firmly in summer mode during the afternoon.

A jacket in the morning, summer clothes by afternoon

Unlike some of the most severe heatwaves experienced in July and August, nights and early mornings can remain considerably fresher.

This creates large temperature swings within the same day. Someone leaving home early for work, walking the dog or taking children to school may find a light jacket useful. By the afternoon, however, summer clothing, shade and plenty of water will once again be the order of the day.

September heat should not be underestimated

The beginning of meteorological autumn does not mean that high temperatures suddenly disappear in Spain. Particularly in the south, periods of very hot weather can continue well into September.

With temperatures potentially exceeding 35°C and approaching 40°C in the hottest locations, the usual precautions remain advisable. Strenuous exercise should be avoided during the hottest part of the day, staying properly hydrated is essential, and particular care should be taken with children, older people and those working outdoors.

Spain’s summer is therefore heading into extra time. Anyone who has already brought out their autumn wardrobe might want to keep the shorts and T-shirts within easy reach for a little longer.
