Government sources have revealed that the Prime Minister will not attend the traditional reception hosted by US President Donald Trump for heads of delegations from around the world this Tuesday. Officially, “scheduling reasons” are cited as the cause – a detail sparking discussion in Spanish political circles, given that no engagements are listed in the Prime Minister’s public schedule for that afternoon.

The decision comes against the backdrop of a packed diplomatic week in the United States, during which Sánchez is demonstratively focusing on multilateralism and the strengthening of international alliances.
The official schedule and the paradox of free afternoon hours
While the cancellation of the reception with Trump has drawn the media spotlight, the Spanish Prime Minister’s remaining schedule in Manhattan remains packed. Sánchez is attending the opening ceremony of the UN General Assembly’s general debate, where Donald Trump is also among the speakers. The Spanish head of government is accompanied by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and the Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Ecological Transition.
Other highlights of Tuesday include high-level bilateral meetings – including one with the British Prime Minister – and an event focused on the protection of minors in the age of artificial intelligence. Also on the agenda is a personal tribute to the renowned US feminist and author Gloria Steinem.
Nevertheless, the late afternoon hours raise questions: although the official calendar shows no engagements that would directly overlap with the reception, the decision was made not to attend the event with the US President.
Assessment of diplomatic relations
A look back reveals a mixed picture regarding Sánchez’s approach to receptions hosted by US administrations. While he attended these traditional gatherings alongside his wife, Begoña Gómez, during his early days as Prime Minister in 2018 and 2019 – and was also a regular guest under Trump’s successor, Joe Biden – a noticeable distancing has emerged in recent years. Sánchez already skipped the reception last year, citing scheduling conflicts with his own UN address or official engagements on behalf of the Spanish royal family.
Observers view the move as a deliberate diplomatic nuance. Instead, Sánchez is making targeted use of his stay in New York for bilateral talks with partners such as UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as for appearances at forums like the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) initiative. There, the head of government issued an unequivocal warning that the response to an increasingly fragmented world must never lie in even greater isolation and fragmentation.
Meanwhile, the Spanish delegation emphasizes that relations with the United States are excellent at the institutional level and characterized by close cooperation on security and economic issues. However, the decision to skip the evening event remains a notable aspect of Moncloa’s international outreach strategy.
