Spain is bolstering its military presence in the eastern Mediterranean. On Thursday, the Ministry of Defence announced that the frigate Cristóbal Colón will be deployed to Cyprus. The ship will operate alongside the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and other units of the Greek Navy. The move is part of Spain’s commitment to the “defence of the European Union and its eastern frontier” in light of the current escalation surrounding Iran.

Naval task force en route to the Mediterranean

The Spanish frigate joined the French aircraft carrier’s naval group in the Baltic Sea on 3 March. The task force is now heading to the Mediterranean and is expected to reach the coast of Crete on 10 March.

The Cristóbal Colón is the most technologically advanced frigate in the Spanish Navy. Its primary role will be air defence, complementing the Spanish Patriot missile battery already stationed in Turkey.

Securing trade routes and potential evacuations

In addition to its role in military deterrence, the ship will help secure key maritime trade routes and support the evacuation of civilians from the Middle East if necessary. The supply ship Cantabria will also accompany the task force briefly, providing fuel and logistical support during its passage through the Gulf of Cádiz.

European initiative under French leadership

The mission is part of an initiative by French President Emmanuel Macron, who aims to build a European coalition to protect strategically important trade routes in the Mediterranean. Italy and the Netherlands also plan to deploy naval units to the region in the coming days.

Spain emphasises the defensive nature of the mission

However, the Spanish government stresses that this is a defensive mission. Defence Minister Margarita Robles stated that Spain will not participate in offensive military operations against Iran. Madrid sees its role solely within the framework of defending the European Union and participating in international missions under the auspices of NATO and the United Nations.
