It is the pride of Spanish automotive history, yet internal corporate documents paint a bleak picture: the Volkswagen Group apparently plans to completely scrap the Seat brand by 2029 at the latest. For the Iberian Peninsula and the local economy, this would represent a severe, historic blow.

It is a name that, for decades, has been synonymous with the motorization of Spain: Seat. Models such as the legendary Seat 600—which defined the country’s economic boom in the 1960s—and modern classics like the Ibiza and Leon are as much a part of the nation’s identity as tapas and the siesta. Yet now, secret documents from the corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg suggest that the days of this storied company are numbered.

According to reports based on internal plans at the Volkswagen Group, the Seat brand is set to disappear completely from the market in its current form by 2029 at the latest. The long-established brand simply plays no role in the German automotive giant’s strategic vision for the post-2030 era.

Cupra’s triumphant rise as the gravedigger

The primary reason for this drastic discontinuation lies in internal cannibalization and shifting consumer behavior. While traditional, low-margin Seat models have come under immense pressure in the European market, the young sister brand Cupra is achieving one record after another.

Originally launched as a sporty offshoot, Cupra has evolved into a genuine profit driver; the vehicles command significantly higher profit margins. A consequence of the rigorous cost-cutting measures currently affecting the entire VW Group is that financial resources and production capacities—including those at the main plant in Martorell, Catalonia—are to be fully redirected toward Cupra and electromobility. There is no longer any room left for the Seat brand.

A severe blow to Spain as a business location

For Spain, this news carries significant weight—both economically and emotionally. Seat has been majority-owned by Volkswagen since 1986 and secures tens of thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, across its entire supplier network. While the factories and workforce are generally expected to be redeployed for the production of other Group models—or for Cupra—the demise of the brand name marks the symbolic end of an era.

Officially, the Volkswagen Group has not yet commented in detail on the leaked documents. However, given the profound transformation of the European automotive industry, the move is viewed within the sector as a logical step – even though it seals the end of a story that began in 1950.

Sharp protests and official reactions

Reactions to these leaked plans were swift. Trade unions and the employee representative body at Seat S.A. reacted with alarm, deeming the potential loss of the brand completely “unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, officials are seeking to calm the situation to avoid panic. Corporate sources emphasize that no final decision has yet been made, pointing to the profound transformation – driven by electrification – that the entire automotive industry, including Seat S.A., is currently undergoing. Moreover, the company is demonstrating operational resilience, having generated a substantial operating profit of 122 million euros in the first half of the year.

Whether the factory in Martorell, Catalonia, will be fully converted to producing Cupra models and other Group vehicles in the long term – and whether the Seat name will finally disappear from showrooms after more than 70 years of automotive history – is likely to become clear in the coming days during key committee meetings in Germany.
